Stir up this simple, four-ingredient recipe.
Milk paint transformed this old cassette cabinet into a charming powder room organizer for storing towels, tissues, and toiletries. Photo: Joe Provey, Home & Garden Editorial Services
Cavemen did it. The early Egyptians did it. American Colonists did it. And even today, many people are rediscovering the art of making interior paint for the home.
In an age of store-bought paints with high performance finishes, you may ask yourself, why make paint? For me, it's the natural, handcrafted look -- along with the satisfaction of being self-reliant. For others, it may be because homemade paint is the greenest and least toxic alternative possible to traditional paint. Homemade paints aren't based upon petrochemicals and they're far less toxic than commercial paints -- even the many zero-VOC paints now emerging on the market.
The ingredients for homemade paints vary. This recipe consists of lime, water, pigment, and milk. Photo: Joe Provey, Home & Garden Editorial Services
The easiest to make and least expensive homemade paints consist of milk, lime, and pigment. For additional body a filler, such as chalk powder or plaster can be added. My preferred recipe is simplicity itself:
-- Hydrated lime (available at most home and garden supply stores)
-- Water
-- Pigment (powder or liquid)
-- Whole milk (at room temperature)
Mix lime with water using a putty knife or plastic spatula. Photo: Joe Provey, Home & Garden Editorial Services
1. Fill a container with one to two cups of hydrated lime. Gradually add water and stir until you have a thick paste.
2. In a separate container, do the same with the pigment powder. For a small batch like this, 2 to 4 tablespoons of pigment is typically sufficient.
3. Gradually add milk to the lime paste until you achieve the consistency of sour cream. Then add the pigment paste and mix thoroughly.

Safety tip: Despite the relative low toxicity of the ingredients, wear vinyl gloves and a dust mask when working with lime and pigment.
Gradually stir milk into the lime paste until you achieve a consistency of loose sour cream. Photo: Joe Provey, Home & Garden Editorial Services
ADDING PIGMENTS TO HOMEMADE PAINT
You can buy pigmentsat many hardware and artist supply stores. Avoid using pigments made from toxic compounds, otherwise you'll defeat the purpose of making your own paint. Some common toxins used in pigments include cadmium, lead, mercury, and cobalt. Here's a good online source for non-toxic pigments. You will have to experiment with pigments to achieve the color you want. Be sure to buy plenty of white pigment, as you'll be using a lot of it. It comes in two forms: titanium dioxide and zinc. The former is a bit more opaque.
You can make many of your own colorants using natural ingredients but the process is a lot more time-consuming than making paint alone. Also, the colors produced through home-brewed dyes are more subtle than store-bought pigments. If you do want to make homemade pigment, try these methods:
-- Add water to steel wool for a red rust coloring.
-- Try simmering everything from berries and vegetables to bark and leaves to create the dyes. Blackberries, for example, make a strong dye.
-- Brew coffee or many tea to create neutral tones.
-- Boil peach or crab apple leaves for greens.
-- Use store-bought juice concentrates, such as blueberry and cranberry, to create pleasing tints.
Use a natural bristle brush to apply the milk paint, and allow it to dry for a few hours before recoating. Photo: Joe Provey, Home & Garden Editorial Services
ADDITIONAL TIPS ABOUT HOMEMADE PAINT
-- Milk paint is not as scrubbable as its commercial cousins. In areas subject to spills, apply a protective coat of shellac or oil finish. If you choose the latter, stay green with a plant oil-based finish.
-- The shelf life for milk paint is short. Store unused paint in the refrigerator. It can be used until the milk sours. Brushes clean easily with soap and water.

SEE ALSO:
Before & After: Aging Furniture with Milk Paint (Design*Sponge)
Paint Color Trends to Move On From (ShelterPop)
Create a Crackled Paint Finish with Plain School Glue
Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
DIY Life
Publisher: Joe Provey Saturday, 10 December 2011 20:30:17

Vinyl Replacement Windows by: Christine Dunbar

Your home is probably your most valuable asset, but to maintain its value you need to make continual improvements. One of the most substantial renovations you can do to increase the value of your home is to install vinyl replacement windows. Homeowners are realizing that vinyl windows can dramatically improve a home's external appearance. They can also add to a home's value because they block external noise and help to conserve energy - two features that today's home buyers are looking for. They are a relatively easy project to complete, and are becoming more and more affordable.
In order to get the most benefit from a window replacement project, you'll need to take two important steps.
First, come up with a realistic budget. A window replacement project doesn't always go as smoothly as planned. Take the time to research the wide variety of replacement windows on the market and what the installation project will involve. Before you begin, it's important to look at the costs of different brands of windows and decide on the features you want and need. You should also determine if there is any part of the project that you can do yourself. This can result in significant savings. One of the smartest things to do is to talk to other homeowners who have done replacement window projects. This is probably the best way to get an accurate idea of how much is really involved. One thing you don't want to do is replace windows on a room-by-room basis. It might save you a little money, but the results will be less than appealing and can detract from the house's exterior appearance.
The second step is to find a qualified and reliable contractor to complete the project. While replacing vinyl windows can sometimes be a do-it-yourself project, taking on every window in the home can be an overwhelming job. A professional can usually get the job done faster and is better able to deal with any installation problems that come up. You might be able to save some money by doing a part of the project yourself, like removing and disposing of the old windows. Be very careful to choose an experienced and reliable window installer. Always check references and talk to previous customers. Ask to see before and after pictures of the contractor's projects. Be sure to ask how many replacement window projects he has done and what his experience has been. The upswing in prices over the past 12 months may have you wondering what will happen this year at your local grocery store.
In partnership with ConAgra Foods, industry expert, and "Supermarket Guru," Phil Lempert, predicts an interesting year ahead.
"We will continue to see higher prices, but we will also see all the different ways Americans love their food - in supermarkets, on television, at restaurants and now even on their mobile phones," Lempert says. "We are on the verge of what may be one of the most exciting and game-changing years in the food world."
Lempert advises consumers to watch for 10 major trends in their supermarkets this year:
1. Higher food prices - Last year's trend will continue, so consumers will place even more emphasis on ways to save money. In addition to already-popular methods like coupons and frequent shopper cards, you may want to consider using your mobile device to menu plan while you shop. Websites like ConAgra's ReadySetEat.com give you recipe ideas and can also help you find out which ingredients are on sale in your store.
2. The group experience will grow - Food blogs set a foundation for group experiences, food trucks tweet their locations, and flash food raves assemble underground at midnight. More Americans are choosing to eat and shop together in new ways. Mobile app marketers will offer "social rewards" for groups that shop together - think of it as the virtual version of warehouse clubs.
3. The baby boomer influence will grow - Last year, the first of the 76 million-strong boomer generation turned 65. Their influence on the supermarket will show up this year in increased healthful food options, wider aisles and lower shelves.
4. Increased emphasis on "farm to fork" - More Americans are interested in knowing where the food comes from. In 2012, you'll see more blogs and social media featuring farmers, as well as advertising and TV programs starring farmers as food experts. Hunt's tomatoes, for example, are grown in Oakdale, California and harvested at the peak of ripeness then flash-steamed to maintain the natural tomato goodness.
5. The end of the checkout lane - Tech-savvy options are gaining popularity, with consumers enjoying self-checkouts, comparing prices at nearby retailers, and taking advantage of the convenience of cellphone scanners, in-store interactive media devices, QR codes, RFID and mobile coupons.
6. Ethnic on the road - Food trucks are replacing gourmet and specialty stores as the channel to experiment and discover new food experiences - especially when it comes to ethnic foods. More often than not, these ethnic food trucks are operated by natives of the countries from which the actual cuisines being offered originated, and they have the ability and knowledge to share the heritage and romance of the food.
7. It's a man's (grocery shopping) world - Dads aren't just winning the bread; these days, they're also bringing it home from the grocery store. A Bureau of Labor Statistics study found that 41 percent of men are now preparing food for their families, as compared to half that percentage in 2003. Look for them to do more grocery shopping, too, Lempert predicts.
8. Extreme home cooking - More people will continue to eat at home to save money. Following the lead of extreme couponers, groups of everyday cooks pride themselves on making the most food for the least amount of money.
9. How sweet it isn't - Reduced sugar products and revised Nutrition Facts panels will be the biggest health claim in 2012. With the negative health effects of sugar and high fructose corn syrup gaining so much attention, look for a continued emphasis on reducing sugar in our diets. Food producers like ConAgra are responding by eliminating high fructose corn syrup from such staples as Peter Pan peanut butter and Hunt's Ketchup products.
10. Listen to your food - You judge the readiness of some foods (like microwave popcorn or grilled burgers), by the sounds they make. Multisensory perception will be one of the new "food sciences" in 2012, as psychologists and food scientists join forces to design, create and influence the sounds of our foods to convey freshness, taste and even health attributes.
For more information about Phil Lempert's 2012 predictions, visit SupermarketGuru.com, and for simple meal ideas made in 30 minutes or less, visit ReadySetEat.com.

What's in store at your supermarket: Top 10 food trends for 2012

Tax credit and deduction tips for home improvement in 2012

(ARA) - With the new year under way, you may be thinking about needed home improvements and how you'll use your credit to fund them. While it's important to understand your credit before making major home improvement decisions, you should also consider another kind of credit - tax credits for energy efficient home improvements.
For the past few years, the federal government has offered tax credits for certain home improvements aimed at increasing a home's energy efficiency. While the most popular and generous tax credits, such as the one that allowed you to claim up to 30 percent of improvements such as a new roof or hot water heater, have expired, you can still get credit for other significant energy-efficient improvements.
According to EnergyStar.gov, you can claim a tax credit for 30 percent of the cost of installing a geothermal heat pump, small wind turbine or solar energy system in your home. The credit has no upper limit and applies to both existing homes and new construction, but not to rental properties. This credit is good until Dec. 31, 2016.
You can also get a credit of up to 30 percent of the cost of residential fuel cells, up to $500 per .5kW of power capacity, EnergyStar.gov says. This credit is also available until Dec. 31, 2016.
While the initial cost of these improvements may seem significant, they can dramatically decrease home energy bills in the long run.
Depending on the type of home improvement or repair you undertake, you may also be able to claim a deduction on your taxes. Before launching a significant home repair or improvement, it may pay to consult with your tax accountant to see what, if any, portion of the cost may be deductible. And, as you do home repairs throughout the year, keep receipts and discuss the improvements and possible deductions with your accountant when he or she is preparing your tax return.
Knowing ahead of time which, if any, tax credits or deductions your home improvement may qualify for can help you make a better decision about how to use credit to fund the work. Since how you use credit affects your overall credit score, knowing the cost of a project before starting it can help you better manage your credit.
If you're unsure how a home improvement project may affect your credit score, websites like freecreditscore.com can help you understand your credit. The site offers members a Credit Score Estimator that can help you understand how big financial decisions, like applying for a home improvement loan, may affect your credit score.
To learn more about tax credits for energy efficient home improvements, visit www.EnergyStar.gov. To learn more about tax deductions, visit www.IRS.gov. You can find a list of regional tax credits, rebates and savings at energy.gov/savings.

Tax credit and deduction tips for home improvement in 2012

Home how-to for the simple fixer

(ARA) - Eventually, that household project that you have been putting off cannot be avoided any longer. But if you're like most homeowners, you will quickly give up on the DIY route and settle for something less daunting, like calling in a professional.
Before you sell yourself short, consider following some of these simple DIY do's and don'ts to make tackling your home improvement project a little more manageable and affordable.
* Do recognize your limits - It's OK if you can't handle the entire kitchen remodel on your own. Identify what components you can tackle solo before getting quotes for the project. Handling things like paint jobs and new cabinet hardware can help bring down overall costs. More often than not, the right tools also make a big difference. Also, it's OK to ask a friend or family member for help - two hands are better than one. Just be sure to return the favor when the time comes.
* Don't underestimate the power of glue. From installing tile backsplashes and in-wall cabinets to sealing gutters and downspouts, high-performance adhesives are a must-have for every home. The Loctite brand is suitable for multiple DIY uses, including upgrades and repairs. So forget about tossing that broken lamp to the curb or replacing that loose drawer handle. A little glue goes a long way. To learn more about what adhesive is right for your project, visit the Loctite Product Advisor at www.loctiteproducts.com/product_advisor/.
* Do develop a mental picture - Before rushing into home projects, take the time to really envision what you want out of the renovation or update. Is the goal to make your kitchen more modern? Are you looking to maximize space in the bathroom? Pictures can help bring these goals to life. Stock up on magazines and pull out any photos that capture the essence of your project.
* Don't rush - We are all familiar with old adage "haste makes waste." Haste also can be costly. Do your homework before tackling home updates. Decide where to begin and carefully plan each step of the process. This includes taking accurate measurements, using effective tools and comparing prices on building materials.
Keep in mind that you won't do yourself any favors by shrugging off advice or not planning in advance. Remodeling industry professionals report that between 25 and 30 percent of their work comes from fixing DIY debacles. While there are sure to be a few hiccups along the way, you will discover a new sense of pride and empowerment once your project is completed.

Home how-to for the simple fixer

Simplify your life with gadgets for the home

(ARA) - Nowadays, our lives are more hectic than ever. But you can pare back your to-do list with some innovative products that make household tasks a little bit easier.
* Skip the morning visit to your neighborhood cafe and brew the perfect cup of coffee at home. Making a pot of coffee takes extra work - grinding beans, measuring grinds and water, brewing and eventually cleaning the pot - and there's often extra coffee that goes to waste. Automatic, single serve coffee machines make it easy to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee, tea or other warm beverage with very little effort.
* Universal remotes are no longer just for the home entertainment system. Newer remotes enable total control of the various electronics throughout your home. Ranging from simple to sophisticated, universal remotes can control your lighting, thermostat, security system, pool and more. Verve Living Systems, for example, offers a controller that provides you with the option of programming up to 10 combinations of controls for lighting and temperature, making it easier to save energy.
* Even in the bathroom, gadgets such as electronic toothbrushes and razors make grooming simple and efficient. Earlier this year, Delta Faucet launched Touch2O.xt Technology on bathroom faucets, which enables you to activate the flow of water with a simple tap anywhere on the spout or handle. The technology also features a sensing field around the entire faucet for entirely hands-free activation. The hands-free mode makes it easier to conserve water during quick tasks, such as brushing your teeth or washing your hands, because the faucet will automatically shut off when hands are removed from the sensing field.
"Our research and development team conducts extensive research during product development, examining ways in which people interact with their faucets," says Ali McKinney, product manager at Delta Faucet. "This technology provides a cleaner, more efficient way to work with water."
* Who says you need electronics to have a high-tech experience? Updates to the shower can be intimidating, but adding a handshower can provide greater functionality and an improved experience and doesn't have to be a hassle. The In2ition two-in-one shower, also from Delta Faucet, offers the ability to enjoy water from the showerhead, integrated handshower or both at once for water exactly where you want it and flexibility to accomplish other tasks, such as bathing children, washing pets or cleaning the shower. Plus, installing the In2ition is no more complicated than switching out a standard showerhead.
* Almost every personal device doubles as a camera these days, but who has wall space for all those framed photos? A digital picture frame makes it easier to keep the photos around your home up-to-date and saves the time and money you would spend ordering and printing new photos. Even more, you can upload hundreds of pictures and set the frame to rotate the images on a slideshow. The latest digital picture frames have a range of style options, memory and fun image-sharing features.
Whatever your need, there's likely a product, technology or application that can help turn even the most mundane everyday tasks into easy and enjoyable experiences.

Simplify your life with gadgets for the home

Bathroom remodeling ideas: from small to total overhaul

(ARA) - Ready to give your bathroom a facelift, but can't decide what changes to make? For a small-budget fix-up, replace your old space-wasting vanity with a smart open-design style that maximizes storage, while visually opening up the room. If your project is major and you are opening the walls, replace your floor-mounted toilet in favor of a wall-mounted toilet, such as Porcher Solutions Dual Flush toilet, which stows the water tank behind the wall. The Porcher Solutions toilet is water-wise, as well as space-savvy, and the EverClean surface inhibits the growth of stain and odor causing bacteria, mold and mildew on the surface.
Focus on your faucet
If you have a small budget, making a simple change like updating a bathroom faucet and accessories can still have a dramatic impact on the style of the room. Faucets with the Speed Connect drain can be installed in minutes, and reflect any decor choice, from traditional to minimalist in popular finishes such as oil-rubbed bronze and polished chrome. Change light fixtures and drawer pulls to match your faucet, splurge on some updated colors for towels and rugs and you have a beautiful before-and-after makeover of your very own.
Think accessible
A bathroom remodel is a great time to invest in fixtures that will allow you and your loved ones to remain independent in your home through illness, aging or other unforeseen events. The best products also work great and feel terrific in the here and now. A taller, Right Height toilet is a luxurious comfort. If you rarely use your bathtub, it can be easily replaced with an acrylic seated-safety shower unit that simply slides into your existing tub recess. Optional acrylic surrounds are easy to install and easy to keep clean, while the integral seat provides a safe option for both bathing and shaving.
Go green to save green
The cost of water will be rising, so get ahead of the curve by choosing toilets, faucets and showerheads that carry the EPA's WaterSense certification label. The label assures that you won't be sacrificing performance. Visit www.responsiblebathroom.com for a wide range of WaterSense-certified products and a handy calculator so you can watch your water, and money, savings add up.

Bathroom remodeling ideas: from small to total overhaul

Make New Year's resolutions close to home

(ARA) - As each year comes to a close, people begin to make resolutions - typically, vowing to start something new in the year ahead, such as lose weight, get a new job, start volunteering and so on. Making resolutions is easy; the hard part is keeping them. However, there are a few things you can do at home that might actually help you achieve some of your New Year's goals. Start 2012 on the right foot with this list of easy home updates and tips to help conquer your New Year's resolutions.
Develop better eating habits
* Research shows that people tend to eat less when surrounded by the color blue. Repaint your kitchen or dining room in a blue hue to help naturally suppress your appetite. And, painting is a great way to tone your arms if you also resolve to get in shape. Once the paint dries, clean out your pantry and replace any high-calorie or fatty foods with healthier options.
Help the environment
* Growing concern for the environment prompts many people to resolve to be more green. Your refrigerator runs all day, every day, which accounts for a large percentage of your home's energy usage. Keeping your refrigerator's thermostat set between 38 and 42 degrees will help save energy and keep your food from spoiling.
Give to others or volunteer
* Clean out your closets and collect any gently used items you and your family no longer use or need. There are a number of national and local organizations that accept clothing donations; some will even pick up the items directly from your home. Beyond clothing, consider giving previously used toys, games, books or materials for crafts to the local hospital or day care center.
Spend more time with family and friends
* After a long day at work or school, not to mention all of life's other activities and events, the last thing you want to do is spend your downtime cleaning your home. Look for household products and tools that keep cleaning time to a minimum. The AccuClean(TM) whole-home air filtration system from American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning attaches to your furnace or air handler to reduce dust accumulation in the home by more than 50 percent, which means you'll spend less time cleaning and have more time for your family and friends.
Learn something new
* One of the most common resolutions centers around conquering a fear or trying something new. Take a look at your home and challenge yourself to tackle home improvement projects on your own. Finish an unfinished basement, build an outdoor play space for the kids or renovate a bathroom. Not only will you conquer any do-it-yourself fears, but any revamp of your home will only add to its value and resale potential.
Keeping New Year's resolutions can certainly be a challenge, so it's important to set yourself up for success. First, set specific and realistic goals; and don't be scared to break bigger goals into a series of smaller steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Most important, have a strategy for setbacks - we all slip up from time to time, but the key is to get back on track. It's been said that four out of five people who make New Year's resolutions eventually break them. Prove the statistics wrong and make this the year you keep your resolutions.

Make New Year's resolutions close to home

Help protect your home from rodents this winter

(ARA) - The cold temperatures are settling in for the winter months, and if you're not careful, rodents can also settle into your home. Your house - especially your kitchen - offers everything rats and mice are looking for: food, water and warmth.
"Rodents are cute in the movies, not in the house," says Dr. Ron Harrison, technical services director at Orkin. "They are disease-transmitters and cause huge problems structurally. They've been known to cause fires by gnawing through electrical wires."
Rodents are a triple threat to homeowners because they can contaminate food, destroy property and spread serious diseases, including Hantavirus and LCMV, a viral disease that can cause inflammation of the brain (encephalitis). They can spread these diseases through their urine and feces or directly through bites. Fleas, lice and ticks can also be brought into your home by rodents and can carry infection to humans after feeding on an infected mouse or rat.
It's easier than you think for a rodent to get into your home. A rat can fit through an opening as small as a quarter, while a mouse can squeeze through a hole smaller than a dime. It's important to contact a pest professional because rats can sense traps and bait. They colonize in attics, burrows, under concrete and porches, in walls and other hard to reach places.
Harrison offers the following tips to help prevent rodents from getting into your home this winter:
* Seal all cracks and install weather strips at the bottom of exterior doors.
* Trim branches, plants and bushes that hang over the home.
* Plant vegetation at least 12 inches away from the home.
* Keep the interior of the home clean.
* Store all food, including pet food, and garbage properly in sealed containers.
* Do not leave dishes in the sink or pet food out overnight.
It's important to contact a licensed pest management professional such as Orkin for help in identifying and addressing rodent problems. For a free home inspection or for more information on rodents, call (800) 800-ORKIN or visit orkin.com.

Help protect your home from rodents this winter

Bathroom remodeling hints: Small price tag, big impact

(ARA) - Unless you just completed a stunning bathroom renovation with a five-figure price tag, there's probably at least one thing in your bathroom you'd like to change. Whether you're dealing with a constantly leaky faucet or the whole room just looks drab and out of date, you can find many ways to make your bathroom beautiful again without breaking the bank or investing a huge amount of time. Here are a few tips to get you started:
Replace your tired old toilet. Upgrading to a sleek, easy-to-clean one-piece toilet is a surprisingly simple way to update your bathroom, and it doesn't have to cost a lot, either. Toilet installations are often viewed as a job for a professional, but some new toilets are being designed with the do-it-yourself homeowner in mind. The new SAVER toilet from American Standard, for instance, can be installed without using any tools at all - just a simple hand-tightening is all that's required. Plus, a new low-flow commode like the SAVER can pay for itself in water savings alone.
Clean up your caulk. If the caulk in your bathroom is grimy, prone to mildew, or cracked, replacing it is a great way to freshen up the look of your bathroom. Use a caulk softener, available at any hardware store, to soften the existing caulk and make it easier to remove. Then, a good scraping with a plastic putty knife will do the trick. After the caulk is removed, clean in between the tiles with a bleach and water solution, and allow to dry completely. Then you are ready to apply the new caulk. Tom Kraeutler of the home improvement blog TheMoneyPit.com recommends using a mildew-proof caulk for easier cleaning and longer-lasting good looks. Apply the caulk in between the tiles with a smooth, steady motion, and then smooth the surface with a moistened finger for a more even appearance.
Fancy up your faucets. Swapping out an out-of-date faucet is less expensive and time-consuming than replacing an entire pedestal sink or vanity, but can still have a big visual impact. Whether your style is clean and modern or romantic and ornate, updating your faucets can be easy and stress-free now that many manufacturers are offering easy-to-install bathroom faucets. For example, all lavatory faucets from American Standard and JADO come with Speed Connect drains that contain only four parts -10 less than conventional drains - and are easy to install in minutes, without guesswork or special materials.
Paint your way to a beautiful bath. Freshening up the color on the walls in your bathroom can be an easy afternoon project depending on the size and structure of your bathroom. Because they are typically the smallest rooms in the house, bathrooms are a great place to experiment with color - if you hate it or change your mind, it's easy enough to change to something else. Want to keep it simple? Pure white walls, especially when accented with glass and dark woods, are a current design trend.

Bathroom remodeling hints: Small price tag, big impact

Buying a fixer-upper? How to make the most of your remodel

(ARA) - With home prices and interest rates still low across the country, and inventories high, it's a great time to be in the market for a fixer-upper. By buying a house that needs some work, you can achieve your dream home for less than you would probably pay for a move-in-ready abode.
To ensure you're making the most of your investment, however, it pays to take a look at your credit before you buy and begin your remodel. You'll not only need credit to cover the purchase price of the house, but you'll need it for renovation expenses as well.
The first step you should take in your bid to buy a fixer-upper is to check your credit report and score. Websites like www.creditreport.com can help you understand your credit. Understanding your credit will help you know whether or not you can afford to buy a house that needs work and if you'll be able to pay for the needed renovations.
You should also carefully research what your options are for financing your remodel. Learn what your options are, from traditional fixed mortgages to home equity lines of credit, and decide before you buy which type of financing will be best for you. Getting a handle on your financing before you buy can help ensure you stay on budget when you're in the middle of renovations.
When you've got a clear picture of your credit status and financing options, you can start looking at fixer-uppers. When you find a good prospect, have your remodeling contractor walk through the house with you so he can give you a rough estimate of what needs to be done and how much the work will cost.
If you're buying a house that's in basically good condition but just looks dated, you'll have to make some decisions about where to invest your money. Focus on improvements that will not only look good, but will also enhance the value of your home. Resources like Remodeling Magazine's Cost vs. Value report can give you a good idea of how much of your original investment you'll recoup on different remodeling projects at the time of resale.
Once you've signed all the paperwork and the house is yours, it's time to get to work. If you're handy, you may be able to save money by doing some of the renovation work yourself. Projects like painting, adding crown molding and even putting down new flooring are well within the skills of most do-it-yourselfers. More complex projects like drywall, plumbing or electrical work may be best left to professionals.
Whether you do the work yourself, or hire contractors, you'll need to carefully manage all aspects of the renovation to ensure your remodel stays on budget. The excitement of remodeling a house into your dream home can make it easy to get carried away on spending. Keep in mind that remodeling estimates are just that - an estimate. The final tab is rarely exactly what your contractor predicted it would be. In most cases folks will find not only motivation but will also experience a renewed sense of self esteem making them fell better about themselves. In turn the motivator also experiences an uplifting feeling due to their ability to make those around them feel more confident and capable.
In most cases the people who may ask, why blog, what's the purpose likely do not possess the commitment to maintain a blogging platform. This is not a negative but rather a point that it does in fact take time and a strong motivation to consistently create blog content people find interesting. Even better for today's cost-conscious consumers is that many of the trends are easy and inexpensive.
The facts about furniture
According to Emmy Award-winning home design expert, author and TV/radio personality Christopher Lowell, upholstered furniture coverings are being driven more by texture and less by prints. Yesterday's bulky, stationary pit sofa will be replaced by lower backs and seats along with smaller "footprint" pieces clustered into conversation groups for more flexibility and ease of interaction. Stacy Garcia of Stacy Garcia Design Studio sees a movement of woods from very dark mahogany and espresso to lighter and mid-toned woods, with raw, natural walnut, cherry and white oak being especially prevalent.
Make a statement
For homeowners interested in adding life and personality to a bedroom, living room, family room or office, a decorative wall mural is a quick, cost-effective way to go, explains Todd Imholte, president of Murals Your Way, whose products have been featured on the TODAY show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Divine Design, Man Caves and Moving Up. With 25 mural categories including Disney, famous artwork, cities and cityscapes, nature, and sports, as well as the ability to create murals from favorite photos, the choices are virtually unlimited. The company also recently launched a repositionable wallpaper line.
The right touch
According to Lori Dennis, interior designer, author and upcoming star of HGTV's new show The Real Designing Women, next year's textures and fabrics will include iridescent metallic woven within fabric; strong patterns and bold prints; modern floral; tailored woven fabrics like tweed, herringbone, plaid and houndstooth; velvet/velour, sumptuous dupioni silk, and faux fur. Natural fibers such as bamboo, jute, eucalyptus, cotton, silk, wool and cork will remain popular, adds DeAnna Radaj of Bante Design LLC.
A splash of color
Deborah Wecselman of DWD Inc. suggests starting with neutral hues of taupe, beige, cream, grey, black and white, and then adding unexpected pops of color with bold accessories from bright yellow paintings to royal blue vases. Dennis echoes this vibrant color spectrum, with rich jewel tones like emerald, amethyst, sapphire, ruby, garnet and citrine along with deep teal, fuchsia, honeysuckle, coffee and gold.
Light up your life
According to Bradburn design team manager Martin Lucki, lighting options will include linen shades with clean tailored lines and a play toward texture. Lamp bodies will be made of carved reclaimed woods deftly finished in soft, neutral tones that showcase the natural wood grain. Beverly Hills designer Christopher Grubb of Arch-Interiors Design Group, who considers decorative lighting "the piece of jewelry in a room," recommends architectural sconces for applying makeup or shaving to avoid the shadows cast by overhead lighting.
Please tread on me
Kitchen designer/blogger Susan Serra sees a renewed interest in woven or knotted textures on rugs with "back to basics" motifs that harken back to simpler times. These rugs are easy and cheerful to live with, make a design statement, and serve as interesting foundations for rooms with upholstered or casework furnishings most often seen in neutral colors. Lowell also sees a trend toward investment area rugs on tiled floors or those resurfaced with wood or faux wood veneers for better wear and tear and a greater perceived home value.
Decorating on a dime
According to artist/designer/author Pablo Solomon, people will continue to look for unique, cost-effective ways to improve their homes. They'll buy and restore secondhand furniture, swap artwork and accessories with friends, and use yard sale proceeds to purchase new items for their homes. Consignment stores and estate sales will be hot in 2012, adds best-selling author and home design expert Lauri Ward of Redecorate.com, with people discovering the benefits of buying older, distressed pieces that are well made and affordable. Chairs and sofas that can be reupholstered or slipcovered, and cabinets for storage, will be sought for their quality as well as the aesthetic interest they add to modern rooms.

Top home decor trends for 2012

How today's vinyl siding packs extreme toughness

(ARA) - Through tempestuous weather and extreme four-season cycles, today's vinyl siding is living up to both the style and durability demands of discerning builders, remodelers, architects, homeowners and multifamily developers. Manufacturing advancements allow the market's innovative producers to artistically recreate looks of genuine weathered cedar, reclaimed brick and deeply-faceted stone.
One manufacturer, Foundry Siding by The Tapco Group, offers a line of Shakes, Shingles and Shapes along with various stone siding profiles and colors in its expanding Stone Collection. While their authenticity to the "real thing" rings true, these premium vinyl panels surpass natural counterparts with an optimal blend of affordability and stout performance - top level Class 1(A) fire resistance, 170 mph wind load rating, 60-plus pounds per inch of impact resistance and limited lifetime warranty.
"The Foundry has great looks and I like the fact that it meets the strict Florida building code wind load requirement," says George Williams, owner of Precision Homecrafters in Birmingham, Ala. "With the Foundry's cedar shake profile, until you walk up and touch it, you don't know that it's vinyl. I put it on my home - people see it and they really like it," notes Williams, who also appreciates the siding's ultra-low maintenance.
"With our weather the way it is - the severe winters and cold, and also the humidity changes - it's the right product," agrees Ray Leonard, construction superintendent at Oot Bros. Construction, a third-generation family-owned builder in East Syracuse, N.Y.
Foundry panels are thicker than many PVC panels, but are thinner and lighter than the polypropylene panels historically used to recreate shake and shingle profiles, so they are easier to cut with snips but still have authentic cast-from-cedar detail. Another major difference distinguishing The Foundry from polypropylene is its Class A fire rating. No polypropylene siding can be listed as Class A due to its flame spread performance - it requires the option of a fire-resistive treatment in order to meet Class A standards.
The Foundry is certified to meet ASTM D3679 test standards for flammability, heat shrinkage, impact resistance, surface distortion, low-gloss and product weathering. Panels also exceed thickness requirements. The Foundry is ICC-ES certified and carries the Vinyl Siding Institute's third-party performance certification.
With an efficient 5-foot length, Foundry panels are easily transported, simple to hang, and generate little waste. Conversely, polypropylene shake products can have a scrap rate five times as high as The Foundry. In comparison with another cedar alternative, fiber cement shakes installed cost can add up to twice as much as premium vinyl. Fiber cement also requires regular painting.
With high-performance vinyl's graduation from a history of limited neutral colors, innovations in UV-fade protection have allowed for enhanced color retention. In the Foundry's case, a proprietary cap stock keeps its bold spectrum of 41 colors looking rich.
The Foundry is a division of The Tapco Group, a U.S. Green Building Council member. Theresa Galan

Have you spilled ink on your expensive carpet and don't know how you can remove the stain? We all have been there, when we have spilled ink, wine or sauce on the carpet. This type of stain are very difficult to remove from a carpet and you might need to have your carpet stain removal that can be done by using household cleaning products and items. The type of method that can be used for removing stains from ink on the carpet depends upon the fabric of the carpet. Carpet cleaning prices is quite hefty and so it is best to try some carpet stain removal from ink the methods at home. Here we will discuss all about removal methods that works.
Carpet Ink Removal Methods
For carpet ink stain removal, the idea is to work on the stain as soon as possible. One of the best ways to remove ink from carpet, is to rub it with isopropyl alcohol. First soak a small cotton ball or a white clean cotton cloth in the alcohol. Dab the cotton ball on the stain carefully making sure that you do not spread it around the edges of the stain. Blot the stain carefully and don't rub too vigorously. Repeat this process until you have successfully removed the ink stain from the carpet. Dry the area thoroughly with a hair dryer and your carpet stain removal is done.
Some stains might not be removed completely by this process and in that case you need to proceed to another carpet stain removal trick. Combine one teaspoon of household ammonia with half cup of cold water. Pour this solution into a spray bottle and spray it on the stain in the carpet. Make sure that you do not soak the carpet stain with the ammonia solution. Use white paper towels to blot the stain and allow the area to dry completely. This is how to remove ink from carpet without damaging it.
Best Carpet Ink Stain Removal Methods
Another tried and tested stain of ink removal method is to use hairspray on the ink stain. Spray hairspray on the stain on the carpet so that the spot is well saturated. Wait 30 minutes before dabbing at the ink stain with a piece of sponge that has been soaked in ice-cold water. Any kind of hairspray works for this method of carpet ink stain removal, but the best are clear strong hold sprays that comes in aerosol bottles. When you are dabbing the spot with the sponge, make sure that you dab it gently and not rub it in, as this will cause the ink stain to go deeper into the carpet fabric.
For synthetic fiber carpet with ink stain, the best way to remove the stain would be to apply an oil solvent or carpet cleaning solution with a clean rag and then blot. Whatever solution you use, make sure that it is not too harsh as it might cause the color from the fabric to fade. It is always wise to test a small spot of stain to see how the fabric reacts to the solvent and if it is safe to use it. One of the last effort that you can give for carpet ink stain removal when everything else fails is to use a hydrogen peroxide solution. Apply a bit of hydrogen peroxide solution on the ink stain and dab it with a clean towel. Wash the area with lukewarm water and dry the carpet with a hair dryer.
About the Author

Graeme Stephens has been running the largest owned carpet cleaning company
in new Zealand for 24 years. Has finding the right one stumped you? Do you often think that if you could make money at home you would be one very happy person? Then read on and see how easy it is to make money with a home business.

Make Money with Your Interests

Everyone is born with a special talent that sets them apart from others. Your job is to figure out what that talent is and find a way to turn it into a business. One lady I profiled in my book, "The Stay-at-Home Mom's Guide To Making Money" had always liked horses. When she was younger she didn't have a horse of her own, so she would groom and feed other people's horses just for the chance to ride. Now that she is an adult, she has turned that interest into a pet sitting business. While she takes care of the smaller critters, she has niched herself in the area of horse care.

What Are Your Hobbies?

Is your hobby candle making, painting portraits, herb gardening? These are all great home businesses just waiting to happen, and you don't necessarily have to produce these items to make money. Maybe you could start a newsletter on the subject of your hobby for others just like you. Maybe you could sell supplies to other hobbyists or businesses. Or maybe you could write a book on the subject. Once you start brainstorming you'll be surprised at all the ideas you will come up with.

One woman I've met online is now the owner of her own portrait sketching business. She actually had two other home businesses before she decided that she could make extra money drawing sketches of people. She does incredible work, and when you look at your pictures it's hard to believe she hasn't been doing this longer. Sometimes the business for you is right in front of you; it's just hard to believe that someone would actually pay you to do something that comes so easily and naturally for you.

You're Producing a Product or Service for Your Friends and Family for Free already.

I talk with moms all the time who say their family or friends are always coming to them because they are great at creating a resume, or because they can really put a nice bouquet of flowers together for special events. These are all great ideas for a home business. Seriously consider charging for these services. Let your family and friends know you are in business. They've already used you in the past for these things; they trust your work. They will probably enjoy spreading the word and letting other people know that you are open for business.

Go With What You Already Know A Lot About

Maybe you enjoy your work outside the home but still want to be home with your kids, or want the flexibly and satisfaction of owning your own home business. Use your previous skills to get your business started. Teachers become tutors, secretaries become virtual assistants, graphic artists become -- graphic artists. The same can go for architects, photographers, and transcriptionists. You'll be surprised at the number of jobs you've held in the past that could be the key to getting your own home business started now.

Have You Ever Thought, "Why Doesn't Someone Start A Business Doing…?"

Do you see the need for a particular product or service in your community? Are you trying to figure out why someone hasn't thought of it and started providing it yet? Why can't that someone be you? There is no reason why you shouldn't be the one to see a need, fill it, and make money from it.

You have many interests, talents, previous experiences, hobbies, and good ideas that are just waiting to be turned into a money making venture. Why not make this the year your home business dreams come true?

<!-- Tag links generated by Zoundry Raven. They assume that it is performing its duty unless something happens that tells them otherwise, such as a leak. Realistically, there were probably signs of roof trouble well in advance. Luckily, there are some easy tasks that can be done to help you keep an eye on the condition of your roof so your home and investment are properly protected.
Do-it-yourself visual inspection
With all types of home maintenance, safety is paramount. The following five actions can be done safely and help determine the condition of the roof.
Look around
Look around the neighborhood for other roofs being replaced, especially if the homes were built about the same time as yours. Chances are if your neighbors' roofs are showing signs of wear and tear or are being replaced, it may only be a matter of time before it's your turn.
Also when doing yard work, look along the ground around gutter downspouts to see if there are abnormal amounts of granules washing off the roof. Granules not only give your shingles a distinct appearance, they also protect the asphalt against premature aging. Finding a small sprinkling of granules is normal, but large piles may mean that your roof is losing its ability to protect against UV rays.
Look up
Another easy action that can be done while on the ground is to look up at the edges of the roof for shingle curling. When the corners of the shingle start curling, your roof can be more exposed to the elements, and if a proper roofing underlayment is missing, the interior of the home is also at risk of damage.
Look out
While on the second floor of your house, look out a window that overlooks part of the roof and look for shingle wear and tear or missing shingles. If you are already on the ladder cleaning out your gutters, you can conduct many of the same inspections. Cracks or missing granules showing patches of black asphalt could mean it's time for a new roof.
Look down
If you are not already in the practice of cleaning your gutters, you probably do not realize this is another element of protecting the life of your roof. By making sure gutters are clear of debris, you not only ensure proper drainage, but decrease the chance of ice damming in the winter. Ice dams can cause melting snow and ice to push under shingles and down through your roof deck into your attic or living space. There are special "ice and water" underlayment to help combat this issue. Owens Corning Roofing has several types called WeatherLock. Unfortunately, ice and water underlayment cannot be added to an existing roof, but is a great product to include if a new roofing system is needed.
Watch your roof's back
An additional area that is often overlooked in visual inspection is what is behind the shingles. Whenever you are in the attic, take a few minutes to look for problems such as water stains on the back of the wood decking or holes in the insulation. Also, make sure your attic ventilation system has free air flow. A balanced system of air intake and exhaust is preferred. Often times, the air flow can get blocked off at the soffit, which affects the performance of the system and can result in poor ventilation throughout the home.
Leave the hard work to the professionals
If you conduct these inspections and you notice that there are problems, it may be time to call a professional contractor to conduct a thorough inspection and make a recommendation on the actions to restore or replace the roof.
A complete roofing system consists of roofing shingles, as well as other essential components such as felt underlayment, ice and water waterproofing underlayment, starter shingles, ventilation products and hip and ridge shingles.
Owens Corning Roofing offers insight into the things you should know about your roof on their website, including information about locating and selecting the right roofing contractor. The site also has videos as well as an interactive tool, called DesignEyeQ Visualization Experience Tool which allows you to upload a picture of your roof and "try on" different shingles and color combinations.
A healthy roofing system is important for providing shelter to your family and for protecting your valuables and financial investment. Being proactive in watching the condition of your roof before being surprised by a leak could cost you less in the end. These few easy tips can help you properly maintain your roof, which can result in long-lasting comfort, beauty and overall energy efficiency.

Home roof maintenance 101

3 Simple Tips For Making Money Online Even If You Don’t Have Anything To Sell!

Have an idea about making money online but don't know where to start?

There are several ways to make money on the Internet - even if you don't have a product to sell. Keep in mind that running an online business takes time and effort, just like running any business. However, you can get started without any products, which is one less roadblock for most people wanting to start a business.

You don't need to be a computer expert to run an online business, but you do need to either be able to set up a website, or have the resources to pay someone else to do it for you.

Here are 3 simple ways to make money online even if you don't have your own product:

Affiliate programs

Being an affiliate means you are selling other people's products, and you get a percentage of the sale, or you make a small fee for each person who requests more information. Most major retailers offer affiliate programs, along with many smaller retailers (with lots of good products and services). It's not a good idea to try to compete with an established retailer like Wal-Mart, Target, or Circuit City. A better way to make money is to find a "niche" that serves a smaller group of people, that you can easily reach.

For example, rather than selling sporting goods to everyone, you might start a fishing site that sells canoes and fishing products to people who like fresh water fishing. You can also find smaller retailers who may offer more specialized products to those who know a lot about fishing, while selling the basics from Wal-Mart to beginners.

A good place to start is Commission Junction (http://www.CJ.com), and you'll get an idea of the products you can offer. Be creative in finding your niche, start with something you know a little about, or enjoy doing, and before long you can be making money online!

Adsense from Google

Adsense is an advertising program from search engine Google.com (there are other advertising programs you can offer, but for now Google's is the biggest and most popular). By placing ads on your site, you earn money for each person who clicks on the ad. Google will automatically determine which ads are best for your site, based on the topic of each web page. All you have to do is place the code on your web page, and Google does the rest.

You can also sell individual ads, and determine your own terms and price. But using a program like Google is simple, and if your set gets a lot of visitors, you can make good money. Again, the best way to succeed is to find a niche, create a website around that topic, and Google will be able to determine the best ads for your visitors.

Write a "How-To" booklet

If you don't want to sell other people's products, but don't have a lot of money to create your own, a simple way to get started is to write your own "how-to" booklet. Pick a topic you know enough to write about, and start writing. Information products are always good sellers - the key is to solve a particular problem. "How to catch fresh water fish" or "How to plan a fishing vacation on a tight budget" are possibilities for the fishing niche mentioned above.

To learn more, do a search for "creating information products" or "writing e-books", and you will find lots of resources. When it comes to choosing a floor that will stand up to today's hyper-active households, experts recommend laminate for its low-maintenance, realistic beauty and durability. But savvy shoppers should keep in mind that not all laminates are created equal, especially when it comes to long-term performance. To find the best floor for your high-traffic home, look for the following:
Superior surface protection - Flooring is exposed to numerous factors that can wear, tear, scuff and dull its surface over time. For this reason, it's important to select a laminate with a high level of surface protection - like the new PERGO XP collection. Offering double the wear resistance and durability of ordinary residential laminate floors, the collection features a unique surface layer that combines extreme wear performance and 30 percent greater scratch protection to better withstand the heavy traffic, spills and splashes that everyday life dishes out.
Quality composition - Of course, a floor's performance is much more than surface deep. Choose a laminate with a high-density core (10 mm total product thickness is ideal) and attached underlayment. Not only will these premium materials offer greater stability and a more realistic sound underfoot, but installation will be easier and faster.
Easy "click" installation - Laminate is the perfect material for do-it-yourselfers wanting a weekend project because most install with planks that literally "click" together. Look for laminates that offer locking systems that don't require glue for installation that's both easy and secure.
Realistic good looks - The best laminates combine both brawn and beauty. There are laminate styles that reflect today's most popular design trends and complement any room of the home - from multi-hued slates of whitewashed pines and rustic oaks to rich cherries - even the exotic beauty of tropical-inspired decors. Make sure that the laminate you choose features ultra-realistic texturing and natural wood grain looks - as well as a surface layer that provides superior clarity.
Comprehensive warranty - A quality laminate will offer the confidence and protection of a limited lifetime residential warranty against wear, fading and stains. If you want to be certain that a laminate offers superior durability, choose one that also is warranted for light commercial usage. With proper installation and simple maintenance, you can be assured the floor will look "like new" for years to come.
"Laminate always has been an ideal choice for homeowners seeking the best in both performance and realistic good looks," says David Hartman, vice president of sales for Pergo. "However, the latest generation of laminate flooring features innovations that take beauty and durability to a whole new level and deliver the ultimate floor for today's high traffic homes."
For more information about the new PERGO XP collection, available exclusively at The Home Depot, visit www.PergoXPvs.com.

What's the best floor for your high-traffic home?

5 Big Internet Business Lies

You have heard from people saying Internet Business is a waste of time, you will not make any money, there is no real money to be made online, it will never work and so many others negative words coming from people who don't really understand in this Internet Business industry.

The thing is, it does work. Why some people make a fortune and some don't even make money at all? Simply because the people who make thousands or millions of cash knew all the lies in this business and they will not trust these lies.

So what is this big internet lies? Below here are the 10 big internet lies that you should know:

1. Starting And Running A Business On The Internet Is Expensive

Do you know that you can start your business with zero cost? You can actually earn your income by joining a very high quality affiliate program. Usually, as an affiliate marketer, your job is concentrating on marketing only. All the follow up, delivery of the product, answering questions from customers and so on are done by the owner of the program.

Usually the 'expensive' statement often comes from people who are living in non-U.S. countries, especially if the country's local currency is smaller than that of the U.S. Dollar. If it is not a currency issue, it is a vision issue. See and think small to get small. See and think big and your results will have a tendency to match your thoughts.

2. You Can Make Easy Money From The Internet

Most people believe you can make money overnight and by not doing anything at all. If it is what you have in mind right now, this myth is what sets the realistic apart from the unrealistic. You have probably heard of stories of how people make 5 to 6 figure incomes in the shortest period of time imaginable.

These stories might be true but did you know most of them have failed so miserably several times before they can really make money? They have learned from their mistakes and move on. It may seem as if some gurus are overnight successes with the wild numbers some people have brought in during a day or a week selling information or products online.

Some interesting facts about overnight success - it normally takes months if not years to realize. In other words, they prepare, they create a joint ventures, they get ready and then build up anticipation for a launch - then BOOM it explodes!

3. You Must Know HTML, Programming And Graphic Designing In Order To Start Your Business

You don't need to know all of these at all. Period. In fact, one of the biggest shockers was the discovery that most of the biggest on the gurus today do not have the first clue as to how to build a web page.

These gurus earned more money because they knew how to reach people. They either outsource for professional help or establish Joint Ventures with other individuals who can compensate their lack of knowledge in any one of these areas.

As a matter of fact, most successful people are true successes because they only focus their time on what brings them successes.

If you want to create your web pages without having to learn programming, HTML and designing skills, just find someone else that can do it for you. There are many professional web designer you can find on the Internet which you can hire them to design your web pages exactly like you wanted.

4. On The Internet, There Is No Need To Know How To Sell

This statement has make people who hate selling are attracted to ads that read "no selling required". Think for a moment, is there any logic at all you can make money without doing anything at all? Usually these programs are usually unworkable and some are run by fly-by-night operators.

In this business, don't try to sell to other people. Instead, you inform your potential customers. Show people what their lives would be like with what you offer and you will have a sale without selling anything at all!

5. You Don't Have To Build A Mailing List At All

Laughing out loud - that is like saying, "I don't want to be in business". Put this in your head, your mailing list is as important to you as the "Yellow Pages" is to a conventional B2B business.

"The money is in the list". You probably heard this from most gurus out there. But you should also have this word in your mind, "The money is in the relationship". The idea of networking with people is unattractive to most who hate to sell.

Remember though, you are not selling anything. You are just showing people their life and how it can easily be enhanced by what you have to offer.

All the above are just some of the big Internet lies. Actually there are a lot more Internet lies you should stay away from. You have to be smart in order to really achieve success that you could possibly imagine. Success is like enlightenment. It is a path and not a destination.

<!-- Tag links generated by Zoundry Raven.
